Web Mining

  • Ontominer: Mining & Populating Ontologies from the Web
Hasan Davulcu, Srinivas Vadrevu, Fatih Gelgi, Hung Nguyen, Josh Ryan
The OntoMiner project aims to develop novel web mining techniques, that detects and exploits regularities within Web sites, to turn them into the so called "Semantic Web" representations. Such representations enable creation of conceptual and perceptual maps of specific areas of interest, as well as operators for analyzing content to allow users to explore the Web of facts and relationships to discover trends and unusual instances.

  • HearSay
    Hasan Davulcu, Srinivas Vadrevu
In collaboration with the Office of Disability Resources for Students and the CUbiC Lab's iCARE-Information-Assistant project, Dr. Davulcu is working on an audio-browser to enable visually impaired people to access the Web using non-visual modalities.

  • DataRover: Enabling Automated Data Extraction And Integration Of Taxonomy-Based Data-Intensive Web Sites
Hasan Davulcu, Saravanakumar Nagarajan, Viswanathan Ramachandran, Dipti Aswath, Chiranjeevi Jaladi
The DataRover system can automatically crawl and extract products from taxonomy-directed data-intensive online catalogs. DataRover is based on pattern mining algorithms and domain specific heuristics which utilize the navigational and presentation regularities.

Text Mining

  • IntEx: An Information Extraction System for Bio-Medical Text Abstracts
Hasan Davulcu,  Syed Toufeeq Ali Ahmed
Improvements and discoveries in the field of biology are constantly recorded as they are made, in the form of free text in Journal articles and in the fields of databases like GenBank. An analysis for information would therefore involve mining the literature for information regarding the interactions between proteins, genes and drugs. Automation of the process of extracting, cataloging and exploiting information on the relationships among the multitude of related genes and proteins, therefore becomes an important task. The project is aimed at using ontologies and linguistic relations to automate the process of extraction.

  • Phrase Definition Mining
Hasan Davulcu, Hung V Nguyen, Vish Ramachandran, Dipti Aswath

Adaptive Web Services

  • Adaptable Situation-Aware Secure Service-Based (AS3) Systems
Hasan Davulcu, Stephen S. Yau, Ravi Bhimavarapu, Fatih Gelgi, Syed Toufeeq Ali Ahmed
In this ONR MURI funded project, we are conducting basic research, which will result in a set of new and effective techniques for rapid development, deployment and operations of AS3 systems with hierarchical situation-awareness capability, flexible policy-based security, and adaptive service composition and management capability.

Computational Biology and Bioinformatics

  • Toxin Knowledge Base: A System for Discovering Bioengineered Threats by Knowledge Base Driven Mining of Toxin Data
    Hasan Davulcu, Vish Ramachandran
Dr. Hasan Davulcu was awarded a joint research grant, funded by the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease and Department of Defense. The grant will be used to establish a Toxin Knowledge Base, a resource that will help in the fight against bioterrorism.

  • BioLog
Hasan Davulcu, Ravi Bhimavarapu, Ehtesham Haque, Huan Liu, Seungchan Kim, Chitta Baral
Dr. Baral, Dr. Davulcu, Dr. Kim, and Dr. Liu's collaboration with TGEN and IGC includes the BioLog Project, which aims to create scalale on-the-fly recommendation algorithms for enabling knowledge sharing about new and relevant genes, abstracts and researcher profiles among biologists while they explore the Web resources.
